Cattle, Cotton, Corn, Cowboys and Really Great Kids characterize this rural Panhandle county.
We have an amazing and colorful history, that is rivaled only by our sunsets!
Castro County was created and named by the Texas Legislature in 1876 after Henri Castro. Castro served the the King of Naples, Italy as consul to Rhode Island. He later became an American Citizen and helped the state of Texas aquire a $7 million dollar loan from a finance company in his native country, France. The county seat, Dimmitt, was organized and named by H.G. Bedford in honor of his Civil War Chaplain, Rev. W.C. Dimmitt in 1891. In fact, we have a colorful present as well! Our three cities (Dimmitt, Hart, and Nazareth) contribute a rich cultural background of German, Spanish, and Irish. Depending on the time of year, you can see lush green wheat pasture, pure white cotton, golden yellow corn, and cattle or horses in multiple shades. Even your "box of 64" could get jealous! |
